Club Bib Shorts by Chapeau
Velo Insider Rating
The Club bib shorts from Chapeau are a stylish addition to their range of cool cycling kit, providing some nice attention to detail and high quality fabrics. We tested the Club bib shorts for over 100 miles of mixed weather riding and we can say without a doubt that these shorts fit their purpose of being an all-rounder in comfort and performance. The pair on review are a size small in carbon grey, which looks stunning in real life!
We love Chapeau’s style of unique apparel which has that ’boutique’ feel to it. It’s rare to see their kit out on the road here in the North East of England but hopefully this review might change that!
PROS: Quality fabrics, superb detail, comfortable pad and dapper style
CONS: Chamois might be a little uncomfortable for longer rides
Quality and Comfort
The quality and feel of the Topazio fabric is second to none. With an anatomical cut to the 4 way stretch fabric panelling, these shorts fit closely to your skin feeling extremely comfortable with lots of flex when riding in and out the saddle. The fabric also provides a good 50 UV sun protection factor making them ideal for sunny days (when we get them!).
Comfort is superb with adequate stretch across all parts of the shorts. The bib straps on this model are a lovely black colour with grey detailing around the edges. The straps fit very well with no noticeable tightness around your shoulders or neck. Being a slim anatomical cut, the design also provides a good amount of compression to your thighs which feels great when you are riding or sprinting out the saddle.
Another nice touch is the zig zag stitching detail which allows for a full range of stretch to the fabric without over stretching the seams and potentially causing any splits from appearing.
The chamois is the only negative to these shorts, however it is only a negative if you are not used to longer rides in the saddle. For a seasoned rider who is used to spending more than a few hours riding then the chamois pad is perfect and extremely comfortable. However if you are someone who gets a little sore on long rides of more than 2 hours, you might find this particular chamois a little too thin for long days out riding.
The icing on the cake is the fabric choice for these Club bib shorts. The Topazio fabric provides excellent moisture wicking which was a welcomed feature in 20°C+ temperatures last bank holiday weekend. The fabric also allows you to effortlessly move around on your saddle while riding without getting bunched up or caught on the tip of your saddle.
We also found the straps and mesh side panels provided superb breathability in warmer weather without causing too many hot areas around the groin or seat areas. Overall you soon forget your are wearing them and get to enjoy the ride instead of thinking about your seat bones!
The reflective tabs and logos are a very nice touch for added visibility, and to see reflective tabs on both the inner & outer of the thighs is very welcome, they look superb!
Size and Fit
Sizing is true to size with a great fit across all areas of the shorts. There is no noticeable bunching up of fabric and the textured silicone gripper leg cuffs do their job perfectly, keeping those legs in position throughout your ride. I’m normally a size small and these on review were a small which fitted perfectly, I wouldn’t choose anything bigger or smaller. Follow their size guide and you will not have any problems with size or fit.
Our advice when putting them on is to make sure you get the chamois pulled up nice and close, as the leg cuffs are very grippy and if you don’t get it right before you ride you’ll be wanting to pull over and reposition everything. Once you get them on correctly you’ll experience mile after mile of super comfy cycling.
