Gotlandsleden Cycling Rain & Wind Jacket by Sigr
Velo Insider Rating
As summer reaches it end for many of us, it’s time to start thinking about warmer clothing. The ‘Gotlandsleden’ (‘Gotland Trail’ in English) is a new rain & wind jacket by Sigr, which looks so good, you might start wearing off the bike too!
PROS: Looks smart enough to wear day to day, provides good warmth, lots of features and we love the hand warmer cuffs!
CONS: None that we have found.
Quality and Comfort
One of the things we’ve noticed about Sigr is the quality and attention to detail they put into their clothing. The Gotlandsleden jacket is a very high quality jacket with many features we know you are going to love, such as the 5000 mm/VC water resistant fabric, reflective details for night safety, windproof cuffs which can be pulled over your hands in cold weather, the durable zip with windproof internal flap… the list goes on.
Starting with the fabric, the combination of being a lightweight jacket with a hybrid wool lining is very unique. The jacket feels light and comfortable to wear, and at the same time provides extremely good performance for what it is designed for.
Comfort is superb as the jacket is sized very well for your average rider, it moves with your body without being tight in any areas, and the fabric provides a good amount of stretch allowing you to layer up with your favourite baselayers, jerseys or anything else you might want to wear on your morning commute to work. The full length zip features a chin protector at the top which works well when the jacket is fully zipped, it provides some cushioned protection against the robust zipper.
One of the beauties of this jacket, is that it looks extremely smart, meaning you can easily wear this to your office with a shirt and tie and still look professional without looking like a bike courier.
The jacket was tested in temperatures of between 4-12°C and it provided a very good level of warmth and comfort on top of a single baselayer. It should easily provide cold weather comfort for temperatures down to freezing, when worn with an appropriate merino baselayer or long sleeve jersey.
The performance qualities of this jacket are the highlight… as soon as you put the jacket on, you feel the thermal properties of the hybrid wool lining warming you up, retaining your body heat. And it does a very good job at keeping your warm while out on your ride in cold weather, you can feel the jacket retaining your warmth while allowing your body to breathe at the same time. The jacket boasts an impressive 5000 g/m2/24hmm breathability as well as it’s 5000 mm/VC water resistance, which is pretty impressive from a jacket which is so lightweight and thin.
Finding rain in England is normally not an issue, however we did not get to try wearing the jacket in the rain. So out came the hosepipe… as you can see in the photographs, we completely soaked the jacket for 60 seconds under extreme conditions and were left nice and dry afterwards, the jacket does a very good job at repelling water. It should provide more than enough protection for light to medium showers or the occasional downpour.
The fabric choice also provides good windproofing, preventing that cold air from penetrating through to your baselayers. The extra windproof flap behind the full length zip stops the cold from cutting through, and the cuffs stop the wind from rushing up your sleeves and freezing your forearms.
The breathability and ventilation properties of the Gotlandsleden jacket are also impressive. The jacket features two side zipped vents, which provide extra ventilation when you get too hot, and the rear shoulder area features ventilation flaps built into the jacket which provide air flow from your back.
The jacket also features several reflective details on the collar, waistline, zip, sleeves and logos, and they work extremely well at keeping you visible in low light conditions as cars headlamps reflect off you.
Size and Fit
Size on review is a Small (96cm chest / 83cm waist). It fits true to size, so order your size as per their sizing chart and you’ll have no problems. Being a 92cm chest I would love to see this available in X-Small which is currently unavailable, maybe this will change in the future.
The overall fit of the jacket is superb with a generous length to the sleeves and cuffs, which is just what you want in a winter jacket as there’s nothing worse than the sleeves riding up your arms and freezing your wrists in the cold air. The cuffs are extendable which means you can wear the jacket as normal with the cuffs providing a tight windproof seal around your wrists, or you can pull them over your hands and wear them like gloves, thanks to the long length and thumb hole.
The torso and body provide a nice slim fit around you, and the neck is very comfortable with more than enough room to move around freely. The body length is also generous, providing some protection to your rear and it sits well in various positions on your bike thanks to the silicone gripper on the hem. Two zipped side pockets provide security for your valuables and comfort when walking around off the bike.
Value for Money
Prices at 999SEK (£86.96 GBP / $113.74 USD) it provides very good value for money. You get a warm, waterproof & windproof, smart jacket, with an abundance of features which make this extremely good value for money. You can wear it on the bike, off the bike, to work, commuting, walking, hiking… in fact you can wear it all the time, it’s really that good!
The Gotlandsleden jacket by Sigr is a superb all-round jacket providing very high performance. You can wear it in a variety of conditions, wear it day to day and stay protected in cold weather. There’s nothing we would change about this jacket, Sigr have really got this one spot on.
