CONS: Thin straps can bunch up a little while riding.
Quality and Comfort
There is no doubt what so ever that the Tourmalet bib shorts by Bicycle Line are a solid, sturdy pair of shorts designed with endurance in mind. The high quality Italian performance lycra feels very robust and the flatlock stitching provides a solid seam which should withstand many years of spirited riding.
With so many different cuts and designs of bib shorts, it is surprising how many brands find inventive ways of shaping their shorts to fit your rear end! As you can see from the photographs took during our review, the Tourmalet bib shorts fit extremely well with no loose material or rippling of lycra around your rear or thighs. These shorts are a superb fit, like a second skin which flexes and moves with your every leg movement both in and out of the saddle. They are definitely a bib short worthy of any tourmalet you can throw at them, and are definitely one of the best fitting shorts I’ve ever worn.
And here is the best bit… they even come with a superb Vuelta Evo gel pad by Dolomiti Pads which is specifically designed for long distances. The pad features a 6 part pad which is only padded in the relevant areas, meaning you loose the unwanted bulk and retain comfort in all the right places.
Even the waistband and shoulder straps are very well designed for providing maximum comfort during your ride. Our only negative in this area is that with and without a baselayer vest, the straps have a tendency to roll up rather than staying flat, which may or may not become a little uncomfortable for some.
Features include a black and grey mesh bib (always nicer than white!), Italian stripe tag to the rear, reflective elements for safety and microfibre leg cuffs for comfort.
Overall we love the fit and feel of these very well designed shorts, we don’t see many mainstream brands producing shorts of this quality, even at twice the price!
Because of that anatomical cut and high quality Italian lycra, the performance is amazing, everything fits like an expensive tailored suit from Saville Row. There is no discomfort, tight or hot spots to these shorts, they simply fit well and perform well throughout your ride. The lycra is also said to be a ‘power fabric’ designed for a higher level muscle compression which you can certainly feel in your thighs while riding in and out the saddle.
That Vuelta Evo gel pad by Dolomiti Pads provides just the right amount of cushion for your enthusiast type of rider without being too bulky. You can easily ride all day long or go flat out for a century with these shorts and still feel comfortable at the end to make the ride back home. The Dolomiti pad provides good cushioning around your sit bones and should last for many thousands of miles riding.
Another superb feature of the Tourmalet shorts is the +50 SPF sun protection they offer, allowing you to forget about the sun and get on with the ride. The bibs shorts also feature a breathable mesh bib for maximum ventilation.
Size and Fit
Sizing is perfect with the Tourmalet Bib Shorts. Being an 80cm waistline we opted for the size Small bib shorts which advertised as fitting an 80cm waist, and the fit is perfect. No need to upsize or downsize, we found the shorts to be a perfect slim fit with all the right fit and feel throughout the hips, thigh and cuff areas.
The legs are an average length with good cuffs which feature a generous sized microfibre grip system which holds extremely well against your skin. The gripper is very comfortable and for my legs, was a perfect fit without being too loose or too tight around the thigh.
Value for Money
Priced at €94.50 (£83 GBP / $110 USD) they are extremely good value for money. You get Italian shorts made with high quality Italian fabrics, a Dolomiti Vuelta Evo pad, superb gripper around the hems and a great anatomical cut which fits like a glove. We honestly can not fault these shorts apart from the bib straps which may work fine for some rider of different body shapes, we will leave that opinion for the jury to decide.
If you are looking for a pair of simple looking black bib shorts with superior comfort, race ready performance and a chamois that could outlast any tour at the Giro d’Italia or Tour de France, then the Tourmalet Bib Shorts by Bicycle Line are more than worthy of your consideration.
